This beautiful gown dates from the late 1840s or possibly 1850. The wider bell sleeve began coming into fashion around this time after the very slim, tight-fitting sleeves of the earlier 1840s.
It is an incredible deep wine color silk taffeta with a slight color shift that is impossible to fully see in the photos. The sleeves are trimmed with fringe.
It is a one pice gown that opens in the front with front-center hook and eye closures, which were replaced at some point in the distant past.
There is a lot of material here, and therefore the gown is quite heavy.
The Met has a very similar gown that dates slightly earlier, from around 1845.
It is completely hand sewn.
34" bust
26" waist
57" length
Very good condition considering age, with a few flaws to note:
Overall condition is quite good and she presents beautifully. Due to her age, I would not recommend this piece to be worn, but she would be a wonderful study or display piece.
This item is not new, and as such, it has wear commensurate with age. As with all older vintage and antique items, please handle with care.
All items are sold as-is, and I do my best to point out all condition issues and provide a detailed description and photographs.
Unless specified, items have not been cleaned.
I do not accept returns or offer refunds. Please see all photos, read the entire description, and ask any questions before purchasing.
