Gorgeous embroidered black silk blouse circa 1902-1903 with bishop sleeves.
This was often referred to as a surplice waist or bodice, which is a reference to a loose fitting traditional Western Christian liturgical vestment.
Surplice waists or bodices typically had two front panels that loosely overlapped, one over the other.
This piece has an inner cotton bodice with hook and eye closures down the center front. The outer bodice is loose-fitting in the front and would have been crossed over and tucked into the skirt. It does not have any closures.
The wide cuffs have hook and eye closures. Sleeves are lined.

Lovely condition with some minor flaws to note:
- The black silk is slightly faded
- A couple of light/faded places on the side and cuff, as shown
- Patch/mend in one armpit, expertly done and hidden
- Small hole in the silk adjacent to the seam of one sleeve, not visible when worn
This blouse is wearable with care. I would not recommend washing this piece/submerging it in water. It could be steamed or perhaps dry cleaned, but do so at your own risk.
